Filming in Sedona

Sedona is surrounded by the Coconino National Forest which is federally owned land but NOT a National Park. Most of the red rock formations are on forest service land. The Coconino National Forest requires a special use permit for all commercial filming and photography.

The only exception is print photography of SCENERY ONLY (no models or props).
Breaking news does not require permits. News features on Sedona does not constitute breaking news.
Filming from roads and highways on National Forest lands also requires a permit.
Typically, permits are NOT issued on weekends (including Fridays) and holidays.

The City of Sedona requires a permit to film on city property which includes city streets, city parks and sidewalks, etc. Contact Jim Windham, Development Services Supervisor for the City of Sedona at (928) 204-7114 or email jwindham@SedonaAZ.gov.

Filming on private property does not require a permit. Specific arrangements and insurance needs should be addressed with the property owner(s).
